Overarching Vision

The Scope of Our Work

Imagine Franklinton – old and new blending together.

Shops line the streets to provide a variety of products and services that enhance health, beauty and energy.

Neighbors learn and bond with each other.

Streets are clean and inviting.

Neighbors walk the sidewalks in the evenings, greeting each other, looking out for each other as they pass by the neat and clean yards.

It’s a thriving economy that is a microcosm of Columbus.

The buildings whisper of times past, yet some are modern and attractive. New construction envisions the future linked with restoration to preserve our history.

As in the beginning, we are connected to the ground – we live and work in a place that produces flowers, vegetables, and plants of every sort.

The diversity is astounding – yet the community speaks as one voice.

It is a quilt that has been stitched together…. working with each other to lift us all.

Business is social in Franklinton – arts festivals, education events that feed the mind and soul of everyone there – we respect that everyone has something to give.

Franklinton is a place where every resident, every business, every visitor has the chance to experience success, significance and security.

Unifying Strategies

The Pillars of Our Work

Advocate

We listen to our business and resident members, our primary constituents. They share their aspirations, best practices and concerns. We provide an open forum for communication and collaboration to design our own solutions to challenges and achieve new growth for all. When necessary, we are the voice of that Tribe with government officials, media and advisors so that we realize the desired results with a minimal amount of tension and a high level of trust.

Beautify

We empower our members to organize and keep the streets clean, the homes and yards healthy and inviting, and the buildings aesthetically attractive. Healthy businesses, healthy schools, healthy homes. When the environment is clean, safe and appealing, people will feel secure and able to thrive.

Connect

We are the “access” organization for Franklinton. We facilitate:

  • Access to non-traditional capital opportunities
  • Access to culture and community
  • Access to business resources
  • Access to knowledge and new ideas
  • Access to each other

Scorecard for Success

The Manifestation of Our Work –Initial Steps

Advocate

We are embarking on a new project that will define The Franklinton Board of Trade as the sounding board for our stakeholders. We will take our message to City Hall and to the general public as Franklinton continues to be the area of focus for the City and for local developers. Our aim is to be the unified voice for our businesses and neighbors in Franklinton, and for the members of The Franklinton Board of Trade.

The program has two interrelated functions:

Information and Discussion Forum (online):

Information hub – updates and background information on issues relevant to Franklinton, including, but not limited to, issues surrounding development that would impact the business growth of the community.

Open discussion – discussion open to any current Franklinton stakeholder. The conversation is monitored and facilitated by The Franklinton Board of Trade to ensure compliance with our established guidelines.

Members-only discussion – this is the discussion that is for Franklinton Board of Trade Members. In addition to topics included in the Open Discussion, this section will contain the on-going business, member-promotion, collaboration and projects specific to The Franklinton Board of Trade. It is also monitored and facilitated according to our guidelines.

Pro-Active Advocacy and Promotion:

The themes, concerns and opinions of the Discussion Forum will be compiled by the leaders of The Franklinton Board of Trade, under the supervision of the Executive Director. This will then be presented as needed in public meetings to present a reasonable representation of the “voice” of Franklinton. In addition, the collaborations, ideas and other news-worthy items will be used in public relation campaigns driven by our leadership.

Beautify

It is our intention to create a clean, appealing and safe environment in order to attract new businesses and other stakeholders to Franklinton. Our first step is to make sure that there is an on-going effort to keep the streets, yards and alleyways cleaned of trash, debris and graffiti.

To that end, we have launched the Litter League. Like little league baseball, we have formed teams, organized areas of litter pickup, attracted sponsors and developed a schedule of friendly competition. It involves the residents and businesses in Franklinton in a true collaboration of purpose.

A concurrent project is to encourage and support homeowners to clean and maintain their yards and alleyways. This is another neighbor-helping-neighbor outreach that is a signature characteristic of Franklinton. We are appealing to The Franklinton Board of Trade members to organize this program that includes businesses providing incentives and material support to homeowners for participating in the program long-term. It is also our intent to promote a service attitude to help neighbors who may not have the physical or financial means to clean and maintain their own yards.

Going forward, we will continue to collaborate with architects and designers to preserve and enhance the aesthetic appeal of the storefronts and historic buildings throughout Franklinton. This will further attract new businesses, and thus employment, to the area.

In addition, we continue our support of Franklinton Gardens. This is not only a beautification project, but it is also a social and health related community effort, which ties significantly with our mission and strategies.

Connect

The Franklinton Board of Trade’s founding purpose was to offer connections and mutual support to its members. We continue to be true to that purpose as we enhance the network of education, information and development throughout Franklinton.

We host meetings and special events throughout the year that are networking opportunities and highlight the services and contributions each of our members brings to Franklinton.

This network is expanding in terms of size, outreach medium, and depth. As mentioned above, we will launch online forums for our members and the general public – all with the purpose of building a repository of information and best practices. In the coming year, we will look for ways to bring together the neighborhood organizations to support and promote each other’s missions.

We have members who make their professional services available for free to the businesses and residents of Franklinton. This has been on a set schedule, once a month, 4 times per year, etc. We are engaged in conversations to include more of our members in these types of sessions so that our residents can access help with business startups, accounting, finance, banking and legal advice. In the next year, our goal is to make this an opportunity for our members and encourage higher levels of participation that will lead to new partnerships and intensive growth.
